With the new paint on the walls of the entry and hallway, it seemed only appropriate to hang some new artwork. I’m a fan of typography- it must be the English teacher in me coming out- so I thought a piece of art with words would be fun to include. My inspiration for my sign comes from one of my favourite blogs- The Handmade Home. This is Ashley’s creation (find her step by step tutorial here):
Ashley used wood pallets to make her sign, but because our walls are plaster, I thought a lighter option would work better. For months I kept my eyes open for a large, light frame and I finally found this beauty for $3 at MCC-
When I was getting the paint for the walls, I also grabbed a tester pot of paint in Quiet Storm blue. After taping off the frame, I gave it a thick coat of paint. Two more were needed.
To make the words on the canvas, I picked a more boxy font for the “kramer” and a handwriting script for the “fam”. I printed them off in a large font, cut them out, and then traced them onto freezer paper.
After they were all cut out and arranged on the canvas, my project started to come together.
Using my iron, I pushed hard on the letters to adhere them to the canvas.
After each of the letters was stuck to the canvas, I used the leftover white paint to gently paint over them. Gently is the key word here.
After three coats of white paint, I carefully pulled off the freezer paper letters and was left with this:
The paint had seeped under the letters in a bunch of places, but I actually like how it made the sign look aged. It is now hanging on the front wall in my entry and I absolutely love it. I’m so thankful that Alissa helped me get a jumpstart on the projects I have planned, and the entry is the first of many. I can’t wait to see my new light, white home come together.
